9th August 2012 – Artichoke Flowers

I love the vibrant colour of a globe artichoke flower; thin, strident, purple filaments emanating from a hard cased shell.

If you are a gardener, you either plant globe artichokes for food or for flower!  Personally, I prefer the flowers.   Bees love them too.  I’ve often watched bees work their way through the jungle of purple, fighting to get at the tasty sweet nectar below.

This photograph was taken early this morning, just as the rising sun cast a warm glow over the vegetable garden.
