27th July 2012 – Satin Moth

Soft, white, silky, delicate and beautiful.  These are a few of the words I’d use to describe the Satin moth I found today, sitting on a rain barrel, warming up in the sun.

I have found out that the Satin Moth is potentially a pest to some types of trees, particularly poplar, willow, cottonwood and aspen.  Well, the moth itself isn’t but the caterpillars are.  It’s a shame that something of such beauty is not always a benefit.

This is a macro photo, ISO 200, 1/60th, F5.6, 46mm + 20mm extension ring.
