18th May 2012 – A Week in Purple – Calliope Hummingbird

They have arrived on the mountain.  You hear them first, and then your eyes have to be quick to see them as they dart and flit in the air.  Rarely do they rest.  All that energy needs to be sustained and so they feed on the sweetest of nectar from flowers OR they take advantage of friendly people who put out feeders.

I’m talking about hummingbirds.

There seem to be more females and juveniles than males but I was fortunate enough today to photo a male Calliope at the feeder.  He had to fight his way in because of the number of females squabbling to get the sweet fluid but he won.

And he fitted beautifully into my PURPLE theme for this week.

As an added extra I have also posted a photo of a female, just so that you can see the difference.
